The Emporia Street Lofts form the largest complex in Phase One of the Emporia Arts District. Concentrated in southwest corner of Downtown Ontario the District is located in the vicinity of two major transportation noise sources: a Union Pacific railroad, and aircraft operations at Ontario International Airport. The Emporia Arts District is a new neighborhood designed, built and managed to support the creative arts. Once completed, the District will be the largest collection of artist lofts and studios in California’s Inland Empire.

Wieland Acoustics provided a focused noise and vibration study for the Emporia Street Lofts. The study looked at potential impacts on four properties that were to be restored and renovated as lofts/studios for the project. Specifically, the study analyzed noise and vibration associated with rail movements and aircraft operations.

Applicable Federal, State, and local noise and vibration standards were reviewed to determine thresholds of significance for the project. Measurements were obtained at each of the four buildings to identify the single event noise levels experienced during aircraft overflights or train passbys, as well as to identify the noise reduction provided by the existing building facades. Vibration measurements were conducted at the closest building to the railway tracks. The measurements were then used, along with future train operations data and future predicted airport noise contours to identify potential future noise and vibration impacts.
