Central Park West is the first urban master-planned community located in Orange County, California. The 42-acre community includes residences, parks, a retail plaza and an office complex. Wieland Acoustics provided noise studies for three of the eight residential developments within the community: (1) “Maxfield”, consisting of 117 townhome/loft units in 13 buildings, (2) “Granville”, consisting of 125 townhome/loft units in 23 buildings, and (3) “Chelsea”, consisting of 98 luxury townhomes in 12 buildings.

Noise studies included traffic noise from the adjacent I-405 freeway and the neighboring arterials and aircraft noise due to operations at the nearby John Wayne Airport. Long-term (24-hour) and short-term noise measurements were conducted on site, including single-event measurements of individual aircraft over-flights.

During the design process Wieland Acoustics collaborated closely with project team members including the client, architects and contractors to address acoustical considerations in parallel with ongoing design changes. Based on architectural plans, the noise reduction provided by the buildings was calculated and the average interior noise levels were assessed as required by the City of Irvine and the State of California. Maximum interior noise levels due to individual aircraft over-flights were also assessed per the City’s requirements. Where necessary, recommendations were provided for compliance with the City and State interior noise standards.
