The West Inn & Suites is a boutique style hotel for both the business and leisure traveler. As with any hotel, the project was subject to City and State noise standards. However, the project was located between the I-5 Freeway and the SDNR rail line and the client wanted to achieve more than the bare-minimum requirements. Wieland Acoustics was hired to provide a comprehensive noise study that addressed a wide range of acoustical issues.
The exterior shell of the hotel was designed not only to comply with the City and State’s interior community noise equivalent level (CNEL) standards but also to minimize potential sleep disturbance due to exterior noise sources. Wieland Acoustics’ recommendations included sound-rated windows and upgraded wall construction details.
Specifications for interior noise control were also upgraded beyond the State of California’s minimum party wall and floor-ceiling sound-rating requirements. As well as sound-rated partitions between guest rooms, upgrades included sound-rated partitions at noise-sensitive employee work areas and public areas, plumbing noise control, HVAC system noise control, mechanical equipment noise control, and vibration isolation.
By starting work with the client during the design phase of the project, and through a thorough understanding of the clients needs, Wieland Acoustics was able to provide effective noise control recommendations that were instrumental in achieving the client’s goal of quality and, ultimately, guest satisfaction.
